University of Pennsylvania Switchgear Upgrade and Computer Room Modification

Project Overview

Carr & Duff installed a new 15kv electrical service with two 15kv primary medium voltage interrupter switches, two 500kva cast coil 15kv transformers, secondary distribution switchgear with a 1200 AMP main tie main configuration on the substation secondary.

Additionally included in this project was an alternate feed from Levine Building, which fed the emergency side of a new 800 AMP transfer switch. The new ATS feed supplies critical loads in the the computer room including two RPPS, HVAC equipment and an existing UPS system.

The new substation is connected to existing feeders within the building. Each feeder was transferred over to the new substation during a scheduled outage with the University. Carr & Duff was also responsible for the installation of a dry action sprinkler system, which satisfied the new fire protection requirements of the new electrical substation room.
