Excellence in Craftsmanship: Under $5M

Located in the heart of Philadelphia at 1600 John F. Kennedy Boulevard, this complex and high-impact project demonstrates the technical skill, innovation, and precision that defines the Excellence in What We Do.
This project involved design assist collaboration between SEPTA, AECOM, and Carr & Duff, for a centralized fan control system that integrated both modern and legacy motor starters, some of which were more than 60 years old. Carr & Duff installed over 20,000 feet of fiber optic linear heat detection cabling (Protectowire 8000) across eight tracks using high rail equipment and lifts along platform edges and fabricated more than 4,000 custom fiber support hangers to facilitate a cost-effective and labor-saving installation.
Our team also provided seamless integration of advanced Edwards fire alarm systems, microprocessor-based fan controls, and custom Space Age monitoring panels. The system was designed to include 32 unique detection zones across seven tracks, enabling SEPTA and emergency responders to pinpoint the exact location of a potential train fire. Despite the demanding environment and technical challenges, including tight coordination with SEPTA train schedules, catenary outages, and legacy infrastructure, we successfully delivered the project both on schedule and under its $3.68 million budget.
This project exemplifies Carr & Duff’s commitment to delivering complex infrastructure upgrades safely, efficiently, and with unmatched quality—while supporting the critical transportation needs of the Philadelphia region. We are proud to contribute to projects that improve public safety and system reliability for generations to come.
